AstraZeneca has set out to challenge Pfizer's patent on Nexium and Cialis tablets, which are being sold by the makers of the two drugs. AstraZeneca is expected to launch the tablets later this year, though the launch of the first product on the market comes at a cost to the company. The tablets, known generically as esomeprazole, have been available on the Internet since the late 1990s. Sales of the drugs began in 1999, after the first generic Nexium was launched in 2000. AstraZeneca has faced increased competition in the past year for its generic versions, and it will face some of the more common competition in the next few months. AstraZeneca is also facing a number of generic competitors for its own generic versions. These include generic versions of the painkiller Aleve, and the antibiotic and antipyretic antibiotic Propecia. AstraZeneca is also faced with competition from the cholesterol-lowering drug Lipitor, which has lost patent protection and is set to lose the patent for the drug in 2009. AstraZeneca is expected to launch the new tablets in the next few months. The drugs are being manufactured by AstraZeneca in the United States, but the company has also introduced two new medicines, called Nexium and Cialis, in the next few months. The tablets are being manufactured in India, which is also a significant market for AstraZeneca. These include generic versions of the painkiller Aleve, which was launched in 1999, and the antibiotic and antipyretic antibiotic Propecia, which has lost patent protection. AstraZeneca is facing some generic competition in the future, but the company will have to submit its patents again, which will take six months to expire in 2017. For now, however, AstraZeneca is hoping to launch its own generic versions. AstraZeneca will also need to submit its patent applications and obtain certain other marketing authorizations from the Food and Drug Administration to launch its generic versions. Both drugs were developed by AstraZeneca, which is part of a pharmaceutical company that mergers and acquisitions are often used to buy up drug companies.
